The woman depicted in the painting is probably Vera Vasilyevna Samyolova (1824-1880). In the 1840s and 1850s, she was one of the most popular actresses at the Alexander Theatre, where she mainly played the roles of glamorous ladies and was soon considered the embodiment of aristocratic taste. The artist is known to have painted her portrait several times. One of these paintings, depicting Samoylova standing with a flirtatious index finger on his chin, is now in the collection of the Tropinin Museum in Moscow.
