Birth of a new idea
Trying to understand the processes behind enchanting inspiration excites many artists. However, in the history of aesthetic thought this phenomenon is viewed from an irrational position, and the sacral moment itself is nothing but a special encounter of the creator with the world when the truth is exposed and "word" is born.
In pursuit of the elusive El Kartoon, I tried to capture a moment of revelation - the emergence of a new idea. It is, on the one hand, a feeling and on the other hand, an absolute conviction, an unexpected understanding of future work: "Many factors converge at one point - the node. It is the reference for further action." The object created for the Moscow festival "Here and Now" disintegrates into a multitude of color and form elements, and only from one specific perspective can chaotic aggregation of details be assembled into an integral image. The author finds plots for his works by observing the surrounding reality. His hero is a simple man. And the hallmark of "digital lace" is an illustration of our age, a reference to technologies that pervade modern society. It is present in almost all the works of the artist and serves as a background - a pixel break, or an extension of the character itself, on the border between real and virtual.
Eugene El Kartoon - representative of the Kaliningrad street wave. More than twenty years of his works appear in the public spaces of the Amber capital and cities of the region. The author often calls them "stories in pictures", and his chosen pseudonym supports this semantics of creativity.
Since 2008, the artist has been working mainly in stenographic technology, and only in the last five years has he experimented with a new form. By moving into volume, El Kartoon turns to metal and wire, wood and concrete, calcareous solutions and oxidizing mixtures - materials that are more characteristic of the architecture than of the painting tradition. The problem of preserving the architectural heritage of the Kaliningrad region is very important to the author. Thus, his paintings are found on the collapsing walls of old houses, and the total installation is in the space of a half-ruined brick ("Ruins", St. Yakov’s brick in Znamensk, 2022).The artist is a permanent participant in group exhibitions in Kaliningrad. Among them - the project "Special Art Form" (2023) in the Baltic branch of his GMIA. A.S. Pushkin. He has represented Russian contemporary art in Sydney three times at the Stencil Art Prize (2015, 2016, 2019) and is a third-degree laureate of The Kutz Awards'16 (Bristol, England). El Kartoon’s works are in private collections in Australia, England, Kazakhstan and Russia.
