Kraus Friedrich (1826-1894)
Dinner on the house of Sebastiano del Piombo and Jacopo Strada at Titian’s house in Venice
Year 1862 год
Oil on canvas
111 x 162 cm
The work relating to historical painting demonstrates the artist’s knowledge of the life of old masters and technicians. Influenced by banquet scenes, Veronese Kraus places the main characters on a veranda framed by idyllic architectural environment. The focus is on the texture and richness of fabrics, as well as the use of sfumato effect. The similarity of the characters' poses and faces to the works of Venetian masters is intended to bring the viewer into the Italian Renaissance.
Characters taken directly from known portraits: Jacopo Strada (extreme right) from Titian’s painting at the Art and History Museum in Vienna; Titian (center) from a self-portrait at the Gallery of Painting in Berlin; his daughter Lavinia (left, stands) from her supposed portrait at the Old Masters Gallery in Dresden and Sebastiano del Piombo (sitting, on the left), probably from the image of the artist Tintoretto.
