Lovis Corinth (1858-1925)
Armored self-portrait
1911
85 × 55 cm
Oil on canvas

The work was written in May 1911, about six months before the severe stroke suffered by the artist in December 1911. The Master demonstrates indestructible physical strength, and emphasized morale. During this period the artist was at the height of his creativity. Corinth’s self-portraits are not only a reflection of his own internal and external state, but also a free and unobstructed expression of his artistic prowess, which could unfold here furiously and freely, without regard to what is sometimes inherent in commissioned portraits
