He is a genre painter, born in Koenigsberg. He was a student at the Königsberg Academy of Arts under Rosenfelder, and in 1851 went to Munich, where he continued his education.
His popular paintings are superb humorous depictions of folk life or the life of the Catholic clergy, which he depicts in the most innocuous manner. His main images: a hermit, visiting a monastery, chess players, playing the zither in the garden, during Lent (the priest catches fish), breakfast, butterfly hunters, unlucky old man and so on.
