A truly narrative genre painting by Erlich, who studied with Karl Stephek at the Academy of Arts in Königsberg from 1883 and became his principal pupil in 1888. In addition to genre scenes, from 1896 he became known as a court artist in Berlin for his portraits of Bismarck and the Kaiser Wilhelm II.
