The year 2022 marks exactly 100 years since the launch of the first flight Moscow-Koenigsberg, which was carried out thanks to Devau airport. For Russian history, this was the first passenger route opened before the creation of «Aeroflot».
It is believed that Devau is one of the first in the world and the first airport of civil aviation with an air terminal in Europe.
One of the first civilian passengers to visit the airfield was Sergey Yesenin and his wife Isadora Duncan. On 10 May, eight days after their marriage, the young couple left for Königsberg. The way from Moscow was 11 (!) hours with stops in Smolensk and Polotsk. The couple’s stay in the East Prussian capital was short, and they were in Berlin on 11 May.
Using the same route, another famous poet Vladimir Mayakovsky visited Königsberg twice. Unfortunately, he left no notes about his impressions of the city, but the journey inspired him to the poem «Moscow-Königsberg». During the second visit, Mayakovsky had to walk around the city with the pilot Nikolai Shebanov. He recalled: In Königsberg, Vladimir Mayakovsky chose me as his guide, and all evening we walked around the city. After seeing the city, Vladimir Mayakovsky and I went to the restaurant for dinner. At dinner, we talked for a long time. He asked me questions about aviation, I was interested in poetry»
