Ludwig Rosenfelder in 1845 was appointed the first director of the Königsberg Academy of Arts and held this position until 1874.
The works of the artist are mainly large-scale paintings on medieval historical subjects. He also took part in the creation of wall murals in the great hall of the Königsberg University, for which he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1871.
Sketch for the painting "Kurfürst Joachim II of Brandenburg draws his sword against the Duke of Alba".After the Battle of Müllberg in 1547, Joachim II together with Moritz of Saxe-Coburg guaranteed the safety of Philip of Hesse if he submitted to the emperor. When Philip was nevertheless arrested by Alba during a meal in the castle of Moritzburg near Galle, Joachim was so outraged that he drew his sword against Alba and would have stabbed him if he had not been held by Marshal von Trott". (Beatiger). The painting was written on behalf of Friedrich Wilhelm IV and exhibited at Königsberg, then delivered to him in early 1850.
Origin:
In 1883, the painting was inventoried in the Königsberg Palace. In 1916 it was transferred to the collection of paintings of the Schönhausen Palace. In 1926 returned to the Berlin Palace. In 1939 transferred to the property management department of the General Command.
