Mesek studied at the art academies in Berlin and Königsberg. His success came from his graphic works in etching. He is known as a brilliant illustrator of Goethe's Faust and other works by German authors.
He was influenced by the artists of the Berlin Secession. His artworks are distinguished by a muted colour palette and contrasting and tense form.
