Yuri Repin named his sons Gaius and Diy after patricians of the times of the Roman Empire.
Diy was born on 4 (17) March 1907 in the village of Illiki, located south-west of St Petersburg. As a child he lived in his father's house, which was located on the estate of the great Russian artist Ilya Efimovich Repin ‘Penaty’ on the Karelian Isthmus in Finland.
Diy was a sailor, travelling on Swedish sailing ships. Then returned to Finland. He tried to find a job, trying different specialities. In the same years I.E. Repin's grandson joined several counter-revolutionary organisations at once, which eventually caused his tragic death.
