Carl Steffek preferred to paint horses throughout his life. Lieberman recalled that Steffek used to draw his little equestrian portraits in "one sitting" so that the patron could take the painting home before it was dry.
The painting depicts a rotmister von Wartenberg on a white horse on the territory of his Prussian manor, located east of Frankfurt am Oder in what is now Poland
In 1880 he was appointed rector of the Königsberg Academy of Arts.
