Born into a family of state serfs, the eight-year-old artist is given to a rural parish school. His drawing abilities are noticed by the teacher V.I. Ilyin and brought to the notice of the manager of the State Property Chamber A.V. Brilevich, who informs the Minister of State Property, Count Kiselev, who orders to place the young A. Karneev in the Moscow Stroganov School. Count Kiselev takes part in the fate of the able young man: he gives him (obviously, he had such a right) freedom and dismisses him from the estate of state peasants.

From 1853 A. Karneev studied at the Academy of Arts under the guidance of A.T. Markov, annually receiving medals for his successes. In 1860 the artist went on a foreign retirement trip, where he visited Paris, London, Luxembourg and Rome with great benefit to improve his skills (for a picture from Italian life ‘Unequal Marriage’ the Academy of Arts made Karneev in the academy).
Until the end of his life lived in Sevastopol. In the city A.E. Karneev opened an elementary drawing school for the benefit and assistance to those young people who have an aptitude for art.
