Soviet painter and graphic artist, book artist, theater artist and teacher. People's Artist of the RSFSR. Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts.
Took his first drawing lessons in the private studio of K. F. Yuon. Studying at the State Free Art Workshops, he studied with I.I. Mashkov, then with A.V. Shevchenko. In 1921 he entered the graphic faculty of VKhUTEMAS, where he studied wood engraving with V.A. Favorsky.
He was actively engaged in teaching. During the Great Patriotic War he served in the Red Army, received a medal “For Military Merit”.
In 1959 Goncharov created four major panels for the Soviet exhibition in New York.
