The artist was born in Voronezh in the family of a German merchant, soon with his family returned to Germany. He graduated from the Königsberg Academy of Arts in 1874, a pupil of Ludwig Rosenfelder. He worked in Königsberg, and in 1878 made his debut at a major German exhibition in Berlin. He systematically exhibited works in Munich, Hannover, Dresden, Hamburg and other German cities, and regularly participated in academic exhibitions in Berlin. Acquiring his own yacht in 1884, he often made sea trips to Denmark, France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands
