Leonid Brailovsky worked as an architect, but was best known as a watercolor painter. He created works with views of antique ruins, architectural monuments, interiors of temples and palaces. The wife of the artist Rimma Brailovskaya was engaged in decorative and applied art and worked both independently and in co-authorship with her husband.
The background to the writing of «Tsarskaya Couple» was the love of Brailovsky to the fresco painting, which they have long studied and copied in the temples of Yaroslavl, Rostov and Novgorod
