In 1900, Ludwig Detmann took over as director of the Königsberg Academy of Fine Arts. During his reign until 1916, the Academy successfully developed and underwent many transformations. A women's class was recruited, student art trips to the Curonian Spit became popular. The flourishing of the colony of landscape painters in Nida is associated with his name.
His works combine naturalism and impressionism. He was one of the first Impressionists in Germany, co-founder and member of the Berlin Secession.
