In 1900, Detman became director of the Königsberg Academy of Arts. Under his rule until 1916, the Academy successfully developed and received many changes. A women’s class was recruited, student creative trips to the Curonian Spit became popular. His name is connected with the flourishing of the landscape artists' colony in Nida.
The works combine naturalism and impressionism. He was one of the first Impressionists of Germany, co-founder and member of the Berlin Secession.
