Dessert plate depicting the triumph of Mars based on a work by Raphael
1817
Porcelain, painting
Diameter 24.8 cm.
Model 1054. Decorated with an image of the god of war in a chariot, ridden by two white horses. Edge with gold-plated embossed leaf ornament on a golden background.
On this plate is an allegory of the sun, repeating a ceiling mural in the Sala dei Pontifici in the Apostolic Palace. A magnificent false ceiling with frescoes was commissioned by Pope Leo X (1513-1521) and executed by the pupils of Rafael Perino del Vega (1501-1547) and Giovanni da Udine (1487-1564). In addition to the Commissioner’s coat of arms, the ceiling is decorated with dancing angels, grotesques, twelve signs of the zodiac, constellations and seven known planets at that time: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter.
