Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig was the son of Prince Frederick Ludwig Charles of Prussia and Princess Friederike von Mecklenburg-Strelitz and nephew of King Frederick Wilhelm III of Prussia. From 1815 he was chief of the corps of the Kirasir Regiment «Grand Kurfürst». After the occupation of the Rhine provinces, he settled at the Jaegerhof Palace in Düsseldorf.
